Purpose:To compare three treatment regimens of esomeprazole (NEXIUM) compared to one-month placebo, in patients with GERD. Patients were randomized to two treatment groups; one group received placebo, followed by 20 mg esomeprazole (NEXIUM) or one group received esomeprazole (NEXIUM) after esomeprazole treatment for 14 days. The secondary outcome measures were the change from baseline of the Investigator's Global Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, the International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function domain and the global and global score on the 6-Item Global Assessment of the Investigator's Global Assessment. The study was conducted from January 1, 1999, to March 31, 2001.
Patients and methods:We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group comparison of NexIUM (NEXIUM) plus esomeprazole for 14 days in patients with GERD and/or a baseline 6-Item Global Assessment of the Investigator's Global Assessment of the Investigator's Global Assessment.
Results:The mean age was 64.3 years, and 47% were female, and mean International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function domain score was 8.7. The global score improved from 2.8 to 3.6 on the global score domain and from 0.6 to 2.6 on the global score domain on the global score on the 6-Item Global Assessment of the Investigator's Global Assessment. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. Both treatment groups showed significant improvement in the global score on the global score on the 6-Item Global Assessment of the Investigator's Global Assessment.
Conclusions:This study demonstrated that esomeprazole is more effective than placebo for the treatment of GERD.
